In 2010, it was ranked USA's 7th and world's 33rd in terms of human capital, business activities, information exchange, politics and culture. Nicknamed "Capital of Latin America", Miami is USA's largest city with Cuban-American citizens. Other restaurants and shops for purchasing last-minute toiletries and other items can also be found in downtown Miami, which is just over the bridge that connects to the port. Take the Metrorail's Orange Line to downtown Miami's Freedom Tower stop (about 30 minutes). From there, hop on Miami Trolley's Coral Way route to take you the rest of the way. The trolley drops off at the port every 15 to 20 minutes from early until mid-evening all days except Sunday.

Miami Cruise Port Ground Transportation

The Downtown Bus Terminal, close to the Government Center, has routes to South Beach, Key Biscayne (good for the Seaquarium) and as far as the Aventura Mall. If you have a look at the map above, it is clear that the Port of Miami (on Dodge Island) is connected by a bridge to Downtown on the West mainland. Some cruisers presume, wrongly, that the access to the port is easy.

South Beach, world-famous for its sand and glitz, is the place to see and be seen. While hotels right on the beach are expensive, there are many choices a block or two away that are more affordable. PortMiami cruise port overview

As of early 2021, The Port of Miami has seven operational cruise terminals with four more undergoing renovation or construction. However, it remains to be seen whether any planned construction and investment will be affected by the halting of cruises due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Known as the “Cruise Capital of the World”, Miami cruise port is the largest and busiest in the world and is part of PortMiami’s 518-acre site. It makes sense to know which cruise terminal your cruise will depart from, and what amenities are available. Miami is considered the Cruise Capital of the world, with over 7 million cruise passengers visiting it’s port each year.

The Metromover also connects with the Metrorail and Metrobus at downtown stations. For traveling around Miami and Miami Beach, trolleys offer free services with many routes available. If you’re a beach lover, head to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. It’s located on Key Biscayne and has some of America’s most beautiful beaches, along with hiking trails that lead to views of Miami’s downtown skyline. A big draw for travelers to the park is the historic lighthouse, where you can take a tour with a guide on select days of the week.

While rates are pretty low, if you are traveling in a group of three or more, we’d suggest a taxi or Uber/Lyft as they will be comparable in cost but give you a private ride. Cruise line transfers offer convenience, but we also find they can be expensive and restrictive. For instance, many are only available on the day of your cruise and the day you depart. So if you’re flying in the day before, then a transfer from the cruise line won’t work. Taxis do offer convenience in that they are already there at the airport and waiting to offer a ride whenever you arrive.

Things to do near Miami cruise port

There are sometimes buy one, get one free airfare opportunities when flying to these airports. Consider the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card and get a Companion Fare certificate on the card's anniversary. The certificate allows a companion to fly with you for $99 (plus taxes and fees from $23) each account anniversary after you spend $6,000 or more on purchases within the prior anniversary year. It's valid on all Alaska Airlines flights booked on alaskaair.com.

Obviously it is cheaper to go from the Miami airport compared to Fort Lauderdale because of the distance. An Uber/Lyft fare from the Miami airport to the Port of Miami would run approximately $20-$25, compared to $30-$35 for a taxi. If flying into Fort Lauderdale, the fare is around $55-$60 to the Miami cruise port, compared to roughly $85-$100 for a taxi. These neighborhoods have plenty of food and drink choices along with easy transportation to other parts of the city and Miami International Airport. Because Port Miami is located on a small island in the harbor, there isn’t really a safe way to walk there from any hotels. However, several exciting neighborhoods are only a few minutes away and, this being Miami, a ton of hotels are within a short ride of the port.

Visitors from all over flock to the city for cruise vacations, its beaches, cuisine, unique culture, and nightlife. Car rental agencies have offices at PortMiami, Miami International Airport, Downtown, and other parts of the city. Ride sharing options are also available such as Taxi, Uber and Lyft.

PortMiami's cruise terminals -- among the most modern in the world -- have been designed to quickly move passengers from land to sea. Drive-in passengers can opt for convenient on-port parking with special arrangements for travelers with disabilities. For those arriving by taxi, shuttle bus or limousine, drop off is directly in front of each terminal and entryways are designed for a quick and easy check-in and boarding process. If you’re flying in the night before your cruise (which we recommend to accommodate for possible flight delays), check with your hotel if they offer a shuttle from the airport.

At some properties you can even leave your car parked at the hotel to avoid costly port parking. Virgin Trains USA (formerly operating as Brightline) connect Miami with Ft. Comfortable express trains depart from and arrive at Virgin MiamiCentral in Downtown Miami. Once you have completed the check-in and security process, you will be directed to the appropriate waiting area to board your cruise ship. Keep an eye on the boarding announcements and follow the instructions provided by the terminal staff. Terminal C boasts a variety of dining and shopping options, catering to different tastes and budgets.

Expect to pay a bit more if you’re traveling by taxi from the Fort Lauderdale airport due to the longer ride. Taxi fare is an estimated $85-$100 each way from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami cruise port. Often these hotels offer free shuttles, or shuttles that are included with a hotel package. There are also a number of Miami hotels near the Coral Way trolley, a transit route offering free transportation to the port. For most people, we recommend using Uber or Lyft as they are among the cheapest and most convenient options. If planning to stay in a hotel, then we recommend a Miami hotel with a cruise port shuttle.
